Many people have asked me to tell about Alasco's Tyler who was the surprise red and white Alaskan Klee Kai.  Previously I have not posted pictures, nor talked much about this special creature as I knew that people would begin saying "I want one like Tyler".  After about 25 years of breeding, there had never been a red and white Alaskan Klee Kai -- nor were any reds used in the foundation stock, so I could only presume that it would be several years before another one appeared.

Easter Sunday 2003 there was another red and white born to our breed.  And since that time there have been a few others born.  The color of Tyler is different from the color of the others.  Tyler is more of a carrot color, in my opinion, while the others that have been born - to my knowledge - are much darker, more of a chocolate color.  Red and white remain very very rare, and there really is not much of a chance of anyone other than established breeders getting a breeding quality red and white Alaskan Klee Kai for some time to come.

This is Linda Spurlin with Tyler THANK YOU LINDA FOR DEVELOPING THIS BREED.

WITHOUT YOUR DEDICATION AND HARD WORK, MY OLD(ER) AGE WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY BORING, AND I AM SURE IT WOULD NOT HAVE LASTED AS LONG AS IT HAS.   THESE DOGS SAVED MY LIFE, AS THEY GAVE ME SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR, WHEN I NEEDED THEM SO BADLY.

A DNA test kit has been developed which will determine whether a particular dog carries the "red Gene" or not.  We have found that just because a dog carries the Gene does not guarantee that it will produce red and whites.  I have all hopes that a red and white line will be developed, but frankly right now I am rather worried.  There is so much Hype about breeding this dog to that dog and getting more reds, that I fear people have forgotten the things that should be foremost in their minds.  UPDATE NOTE:  It seems that the Hype, excitement and anticipation of red and whites has decreased -- so now I am going to post more and better pictures of Tyler.  Please be aware that Tyler has not produced any offspring after mating with several different females.  Now he is getting older, and I don't know if I am going to try any more matings or not -- so please don't ask for Tyler Junior or Tylerette.

We should ALL be breeding for HEALTH, STRUCTURE, TEMPERAMENT, SIZE, ALL THE ASSETS STATED IN THE BREED STANDARDS,   and the thing that should be of our least concern is the red color.  I am all for getting a line of Reds started, but only if all the other attributes are considered first.

With a lot of work, concentration, dedication and oodles of luck, some breeders will be able to accomplish all of these things.  At this time (2006) Barbara Williams and Carol Din have been the most successful in producing red puppies.

Following is a collections of pictures of Tyler.  Unfortunately when he was a baby I had a pretty poor digital camera and so many of these pictures are out of color balance and not very sharp -- but maybe you will be able to see enough to enjoy the experience we had of watching him grow up.

Tyler loves babies

Can I play with all of them at the same time, Mom?

My wish for all of you would be that someday you may each have a dog that is of the special temperament of Tyler --- one that has as much love to give, and is as calm and relaxed as Tyler is.  He is a joy to have around.  I don't think I have ever seen him "Hyper" except when there is a female in season nearby.  Then he becomes very vocal and cries like a baby while he paces in front of her fence.

My personal thanks to our friend, Kortney, who went into the show ring for the first time when she was eleven years old, with our Tyler at the other end of the leash.  Through her successful efforts he became a UKC Grand Champion.
